After years of lobbying by health groups Alberta is finally moving to ban young people from using indoor tanning beds over growing fears about skin cancer. The government says youths under 18 will not be allowed to use ultraviolet tanning machines starting on Jan. 1. Businesses will also be prohibited from advertising such machines to minors and must post signs about the age restrictions and the dangers of UV tanning. “Research has shown that using artificial tanning when you are under 35 dramatically increases your risk for melanoma,” Health Minister Sarah Hoffman said Wednesday. Click here to read the full article.

“As people go about their daily work lives, whether in a restaurant or office or networking and interacting with colleagues, customers, clients, vendors, and other associates, there can be a common but hidden scourge: excessive sweating.  In fact, a national survey conducted by the International Hyperhidrosis Society —the scholars of sweat—  shows multiple millions suffer from extreme, uncomfortable, embarrassing, debilitating and emotionally-devastating sweating. This type of sweating is a serious medical condition known as hyperhidrosis and nearly 367 million people of all ages struggle with it on their hands, feet, face, underarms or body. Hyperhidrosis can be particularly devastating in work environments where “keeping your cool” is the name of the game and “image is everything.” While many people attempt to hide their sweating problems and suffer in silence, the impacts are often hard to cover up. Dramatic sweating in the presence of peers at work, or in environments like team dinners, expos, conferences, customer meetings, happy hours, and other events, can cause severe embarrassment, stress, anxiety, and other emotional issues. Even when people are alone, hyperhidrosis often takes a heavy toll—adversely impacting one’s productivity in a myriad of ways, both professionally and personally.” Click here to continue.

Have you heard of the Vampire Facelift? It is a scary sounding name for a unique way of building up your skin, adding volume, glow and smoothing fine lines and wrinkles, even under the eyes!

At Toronto Dermatology Centre, we offer PRP Facial Rejuvenation, which combines the power of PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) with microneedling. This technique has been featured on episodes of The Doctors and can stimulate your own collagen by up to 1000%!

A small amount of your blood is drawn, and it is then placed in a centrifuge. The centrifuge spins rapidly to separate the platelets from the rest of the blood. Your practitioner then applies the platelets onto the area to be treated, often the face for anti-aging purposes, but other areas can be treated as well. Using the Eclipse micro pen Elite, the platelets are infused into your skin, resulting in an abundance of essential growth factors being deposited directly into the skin. Prior to treatment, a topical numbing cream is applied to relieve any discomfort.

Immediately after the treatment, the skin will appear rosy to red, depending on the depth of the treatment and the skin may feel tight. The next day, any redness will be reduced to a pale pink, and there is no real downtime involved. Within days, the skin appears fuller and healthier, however real results won’t be visible until about 4-8 weeks after treatment. For anti-aging, the recommended number of treatments is 2-3 done about 4-6 weeks apart. For scars, such as acne or surgical, the patient may require 3-6 treatments, about 6 weeks apart.

Bonus: stretch marks can also be successfully treated with PRP with nice results.

As a side note, I had the treatment with the micro pen performed on me recently. Although it is too soon yet to see full results, my face already looks fuller and healthier. Is it possible that my pores already look smaller too? I swear they do! I am counting down the days until I can get my next treatment done.

Have you ever been tempted to buy a designer purse online, only to get it home and find out it is a fake? Well, the same is often true when it comes to medical grade skin care. The adage “if it seems too good to be true, then it probably is” comes to mind.

Well known online retailers, even ones you may think you are safe with, cannot sell medical grade products. In fact, as a medical esthetician, I can’t even purchase medical grade products from a supplier. Why? Because if it is truly a medical grade skin care line, it can only be bought from the supplier via a medical professional. How then could it be possible that you could buy items such as SkinMedica or ZO Obagi thru Amazon at a fraction of the price it is sold at any medical clinic?

Just like fake designer purses, a lot of companies are creating products that look like, even smell like the originals. But they are not. In fact there are many rip off companies using ineffective, unstable or more worrisome, toxic substances as filler in their products. There is no health regulation to follow, and these companies don’t care if you ever buy from them again. They just want a quick buck with no regards to the damage it may do to the buyer.

I remember a specific incident a few years ago. A younger patient of mine came in with red, irritated skin. Nothing was calming her skin down. I gave her a sample of Skin Medica’s Redness Relief, an ointment- like moisturizer that helps to calm the spasming vessels and hydrate the skin at the same time. She loved it. Then she called me and told me she bought it online for much less than what we sell it for. As a side note, all of our products are sold at the manufacturer’s suggested retail price, no more, no less.

I told her to bring it in, I had a bad feeling. She came in and was so sure it was the real deal. It looked the same on the outside of the packaging, and it smelled the same on the inside. I took one look at the actual product and informed her it was a fake. How did I know so quickly? Well, remember I mentioned that it is an ointment? This product was a cream. Skin Medica doesn’t make their Redness Relief in a cream. I couldn’t be sure what was in what she bought, or if it was even for her skin type. I told her she could do what she wanted with it, it might not hurt, but it might not help either.

She purchased the real item at our clinic. Lesson learned.

I had another patient purchase a chemical peel online. She thought she could fade her tattoo with a TCA peel. She came to see me to help her resurface the scar she created with the peel. The damage was quite severe, about twice the size of the original tattoo. Basically we were now dealing with a 2nd or 3rd degree burn. She should have known better, she was an esthetician, after all!!

If you spend a lot of money for a designer purse and end up with a fake, it is frustrating, embarrassing and a financial loss, but it isn’t going to hurt you. If you buy medical grade products online, the same can’t be guaranteed. Our skin care companies spend a great deal of their time trying to combat copycats. It is their name out there and they don’t want to be associated with the negative effects that are almost inevitable with copycat skin care lines. They are either ineffective, or they may actually harm your skin.

Save your money, save your face. It is the only face you will ever have. Don’t take chances to save a few bucks, the stories of regret are too often told. A consult with a professional skin care advisor, experienced suggestions for what is right for you, and knowing you are buying the authentic item is peace of mind.

Visit Toronto Dermatology Centre for Skin Medica, ZO Obagi, SkinCeuticals, Latisse, and more, where the products are always authentic. Top line products for top line patients. We are happy when you are.

“Contrary to what you might think, moles are not the most likely place for a deadly melanoma to develop, a new analysis shows. In fact, a review of 38 previously published medical studies involving more than 20,000 melanomas showed that only 29 percent of the skin cancers started in moles patients already had, while 71 percent arose as new lesions on the skin.” View the full article here.
