Injectable fillers such as Juvederm® (e.g. Ultra, UltraPlus, Volbella, Volift, Voluma, etc.) and Restylane® (including Lyft, Defyne) are very popular cosmetic procedures in Toronto, in Canada, and in the world. That is because these injectable fillers are quick, simple, safe, and effective treatments (in experienced hands!) used to reduce the volume loss observed when we age and to restore a more youthful appearance. Our dermatologists have a keen esthetic eye and will use their expertise to often combine fillers with BOTOX® or Dysport® to optimize a more youthful appearance for you.
Know who is injecting you with fillers – At our dermatology clinic, only a Dermatologist, the most trained and experienced physician in cosmetic anti-aging procedures, will perform your treatments. We never delegate to a nurse or other physician since it is never worth compromising your beauty or health. Great results are based on multiple factors, including an artistic eye, knowledge of beauty and symmetry, and most importantly medical anatomy. Trust your face to a skin expert to ensure flawless, natural results.
Our dermatologists has extensive experience and training using a variety of dermal fillers. You can trust our physicians to provide outstanding results and safety, and an all-natural more youthful look. Of note, in 2012 and 2013, Dr. Anatoli Freiman and Dr. Benjamin Barankin were both recognized by RealSelf.com as being the Top Dermatologists in Toronto, so you’re in great hands. Also, of great importance, ONLY our dermatologists will inject you with BOTOX® and Fillers, no one else.
Patient information on FILLERS (Hyaluronic Acid)
The youthful appearance of our skin depends on a substance known as hyaluronic acid. Found in all normal skin, it gives volume and fullness. Ageing and sun exposure weaken the amount and quality of hyaluronic acid in the skin. Until recently, lines and folds in the skin were filled with collagen derived from cows. We now have non-animal-derived hyaluronic acid fillers, such as Juvederm®, Restylane®, Teosyal® etc. Hyaluronic acid fillers are fully biocompatible, resulting in few side-effects and long-lasting effects, as well as a natural soft feel. These dermal fillers can provide excellent results in the treatment of wrinkles, folds, and in augmentation of the lip.
How do fillers work?
The hyaluronic acid gel is injected into the skin using a fine, sterile needle. It is placed by your dermatologist in a position in the skin determined by factors such as the location and depth of a wrinkle or fold. This results in immediate lifting of wrinkles and plumping of the lips. From a visual perspective, fillers replenish volume and refresh you by smoothing out the signs of aging.
What kinds of wrinkles can be treated?
Commonly treated sites include the nasolabial folds (from the edge of the nose to the angle of the mouth), the wrinkles around the lips and the forehead, deep hollows under the eyes, but other sites can also be treated. We can eliminate or reduce shadows around the eye and mouth, and add volume to the cheeks for a healthy youthful glow.
Is it painful?
This is very individual and depends on how sensitive you are to pain, as well as which areas are being treated. The injections may be slightly uncomfortable (if scored out of 10, where 10 is the worse pain possible, BOTOX® is typically 1/10 pain like a mosquito bite, and fillers 2-3/10 pain), but the treatment is usually very tolerable. Pain from fillers is minimized by a variety of techniques that may include ice packs and/or local anesthetic.

How long does the effect last?
Since hyaluronic acid cosmetic fillers are made of a substance similar to your own skin, the same ongoing process (ageing and normal skin turnover) that changes the structure of the skin will also alter the products. How long the effect of the treatment lasts varies between individuals. It depends on such factors as the structure of the skin, one’s lifestyle, age, and the location treated. Most patients choose to have a touch-up treatment done within 6-12 months of the original treatment.
How will my skin look after the treatment?
Immediately after the treatment, there may be slight redness, swelling, and tenderness at the treated area. This is a normal result of the injection and the inconvenience is temporary. It generally goes away in a few days.
Mild bruising at the treatment site is not common and can be covered with make-up immediately; it resolves after 7-10 days. Some bumps in the skin may occur temporarily following the injection.
After lip treatment, the lips may become swollen and look slightly uneven. This can persist for several days, resolving within a week.
If you have previously suffered from facial cold sores, there is a small risk that the needle punctures could contribute to another cold sore eruption. If you are using aspirin or any blood thinner, you should be aware that these might increase bleeding and bruising at the injection site.
Our dermatologists and staff will discuss aftercare with you to minimize the risk of problems or downtime. Know that you are in trusted hands at the Toronto Dermatology Centre.
