Findings from recent dermatology conference (Derm Update) on acne, anti-aging:

 – Retinoids (e.g. retinol, tretinoin) are considered the gold standard in anti-aging topical medicine.
 – Oral lycopene, as found in tomatoes, results in less sun damage and fewer sunburns.
 – Adolescents with acne have increased amounts of the P. acnes bacteria, while adults do not.

Hyperhidrosis is sweating in excess of that needed for normal thermoregulation (temperature control). The most commonly affected areas are the axillae (armpits), palms and soles, although any body site can be involved. In most cases, the condition is idiopathic (cause unknown), although rarely it may be secondary to underlying disease (e.g. cancer), metabolic conditions, neurologic conditions, febrile illness, or medications (e.g. propranolol, fluoxetine, doxepin, venlafaxine)….

We hear a lot about prevention when it comes to skin care, and for good reason: If we can take care of our skin early on, we can help to prevent the signs of aging for as long as possible. Most skin aging starts at a young age.  A sprinkling of freckles is often a child’s first visible sign of sun exposure, an early sign that the skin isn’t being properly protected. The commitment to sun protection needs to start early, often with a parent providing proper sun protection for their young ones. When exposed to UV radiation, the skin begins producing pigment to protect itself against sun damage, which leads to the formation of hyperpigmentation and sunspots.  Photo damage appears as the first signs of aging. Frown lines between the brows, fine lines and crow’s-feet start to become visible. The thin skin around the eye area tends to age faster, as collagen breaks down easier where there are no oil glands….

Dr. Benjamin Barankin and Dr. Anatoli Freiman just spoke to over 200 family doctors/GPs on Dermatology. Topics covered included diagnosing and treating acne, rosacea, and psoriasis, as well as how to properly use topical steroids and other anti-inflammatory options. They also discussed new and exciting treatments for a variety of skin conditions,…

I think if I was stranded on a desert Island and I could only take one thing with me (other than sunblock, of course) it would have to be Latisse by Allergan. Latisse is a prescription eyelash product that makes the eyelashes both longer and fuller. Actually they can even become darker too! When used properly, you can start to see results in about 8 weeks, with full results in about 16 weeks. Once you have reached your gorgeous eyelash potential, then you can maintain the results by using it a few times a week….

Dr. Benjamin Barankin was interviewed by Pauline Chan on CTV on Nov. 16, 2012 for a story about a Toronto woman who was injected with a filler by a supposed nurse trained in another country and developed a life-threatening infection and severe disability. Dr. Barankin, having extensive training and experience injecting fillers safely and with terrific natural results,…

At Toronto Dermatology Centre, we regularly treat patients who have warts, a superficial viral infection (therefore contagious by touch/contact) of the skin caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). Thankfully, this condition is benign and often self-limited (meaning it can go away on its own even without treatment). Warts can affect skin and mucosa, and there are more than 150 types/strains of this virus. Clinically, HPV manifests itself as either: common warts, flat warts, genital warts, or deep palmoplantar warts…
