Recent studies on melanoma skin cancer show that recurrence is possible after many years. A study of more than 4700 patients showed a melanoma recurrence rate of 7% at 15 years, and 11% at 25 years after initial treatment which reinforces the importance of periodic skin examinations. Another study recently published found that men accounted for 40% of melanoma diagnoses but more than 63% of melanoma-related deaths, overall showing a 55% increased risk of dying from melanoma in men as compared to women.
