Doctor and patient are discussing something, just hands at the table

A review of complementary and alternative medicines used by more than 51 percent of patients with psoriasis, shows that indigo naturalis, curcumin, dietary modification, fish oil, meditation, and acupuncture may be effective in some patients, but proceed cautiously investigators say.

“There have been many complimentary and alternative medicine treatments investigated for psoriasis. There is some evidence of the efficacy for these therapies in psoriasis; however, these studies must be interpreted cautiously given their small sample sizes, variability in the quality of the study design, and differences in primary outcomes measured,” wrote researchers who were led by Anna J. Nichols, M.D., Ph.D., co-director of the High Risk Skin Cancer Clinic of the University of Miami Health System.
The review, published online September 15 in JAMA Dermatology, examines the results of 57 trials and three meta-analyses. The assessment is important, said co-author Alexandra Price, M.D., a resident with the University of Miami Health System, because this is largely uncharted territory.

“For the most part, it has been uncharted territory for physicians to counsel patients on which of these alternative therapies are safe and effective. Familiarizing ourselves with the evidence behind these therapies allows us to better counsel and advise our patients on potential interactions, adverse reactions and efficacy,” she said.

The review is based on a search of PubMed, Embase and www.clinicaltrials.gov for relevant studies published or conducted between 1950 and 2017. The final analysis included 44 research clinical trials, 10 uncontrolled trials, two controlled non-randomized trials, one prospective non-randomized controlled trial and three meta-analyses.

From Justin Bieber to Lorde, celebrities and bloggers are going bare-faced on social media and opening up about skin problems. And with 25% of women over 30 experiencing acne, it’s not just a teenage affliction

It was on a family holiday that Kali Kushner discovered, abruptly, just how others viewed her skin. “At the end of the day I washed off my makeup,” she recalls. “My nephew said: ‘Why is your face so dirty?’ It took me a minute to realise he saw my foundation as a ‘clean face’ and acne as dirt.”

Soon after, Kushner, 23, from Cincinnati, Ohio, began documenting her struggle with acne on the Instagram account @myfacestory – her experience with the drug Accutane, dermarolling, makeup, scarring, hyperpigmentation, alongside all the ways people have responded to her acne, from her husband, who has been steadfastly supportive, to the traffic police officer who assumed she was a junkie. To her surprise, people began following. Today, with more than 50,000 followers, she makes up part of the growing acne positivity movement.

Patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and psoriasis may have an increased risk for type 2 diabetes (T2D), according to a study published online September 12 in Rheumatology.

“This population-based study identified a 50% increase and 40% increased risk of T2D among an incident cohort of PsA patients compared with patients with psoriasis and those in the general population, respectively,” write Neil McHugh, MBChB, MD, FRCP, FRCPath, from the University of Bath and Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases, Upper Borough Walls, Bath, United Kingdom, and colleagues.

People with the scaly skin condition psoriasis are often faced with people who don’t want to shake hands with them and who see them – incorrectly – as contagious, according to a new study.

“Patients with psoriasis often express frustration to me that they experience discrimination in public places and the work environment,” study coauthor Dr. Joel Gelfand of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia told Reuters Health by email. “My patients tell me that they have been asked not to use a pool, feel embarrassed going to the hair salon or have been fired from jobs that require interaction with the public.”

Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease that speeds up the lifecycle of skin cells, causing them to build up rapidly on the surface of the skin. The extra skin cells cause scales and red patches that are itchy and sometimes painful. Some people with psoriasis develop arthritis, too.
