Dr. Anatoli Freiman of the Toronto Dermatology Centre was recently appointed to serve on the medical advisory board of the patient advocacy group Canadian Skin Patient Alliance. The Medical Advisory Board, consisting of dermatologists, assists the CSPA on a range of projects, making themselves available to review documents, offer advice and provide clinical expertise as required.

Dr. Barankin was quoted in the Fall 2012 issue of Revive Magazine discussing exfoliating, cleansers, moisturizers, eyecreams, lip protection and foods and other behaviours that affect the skin, and how to adjust your regimen based on the weather.

In the Style section of the Jan. 12, 2013 issue of The Globe and Mail, Dr. Benjamin Barankin was quoted in “All in one…and one for all?” This article highlights how skin care and beauty products are now promising multiple benefits in a single bottle. Dr. Barankin’s expertise as a dermatologist is once again quoted discussing how simplicity is important, but that doesn’t always translate into effectiveness.

A recent scientific research study in Archives of Dermatology looked at about 500 patients who received treatment for basal cell cancer (BCC; the most common skin cancer and the most common cancer in fact overall) or squamous cell cancer (SCC). The researchers found that itch was the most common symptom reported for both skin cancers – 43% of patients with SCC and 33% of patients with BCC reported this symptom. Interestingly, pain was much more common in patients with squamous cell cancer (SCC) at approximately 40% than in those with basal cell cancer (BCC) at nearly 18%.
