Our very own Dr. Benjamin Barankin was extensively quoted in a recent National Post supplement discussing acne, the various causes and treatments for acne, as well as the psychosocial impact of acne. Click here to view the article.

A chemical peel is one of the best anti-aging tools an esthetician has to offer. Professional peels not only enhance the texture and tone of the skin—they also help the skin to look and act younger over time.

During a professional peel, a chemical solution is applied to the skin to remove its outer layers. As dead skin is sloughed away through the chemical exfoliation process, new skin cells emerge resulting in a luminous, healthy glow. Peels also help to diminish fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, acne bumps and even scarring….

As a medical esthetician at a Toronto Dermatology Centre, it is my job to work in conjunction with our dermatologists to help patients overcome or diminish their skin conditions. Patients seeking help with acne concerns or rosacea or any other number of skin maladies are often at a loss as to how to improve their condition. Often they hope that the doctor will be able to give them a magic pill or cream and voila! Their skin is miraculously cured….
With spring just around the corner, it is time to start thinking about getting ready to reveal a healthier, dewy complexion. With all the options available today, there is no excuse for us not to look our best. No more hats pulled down to here and scarves wrapped up to there. Today’s face is that of a smooth, even toned skin void of dehydration and dull appearance. Spring is a time for metamorphosis, a time to turn from a pretty caterpillar into a beautiful butterfly….
Our very own Dr. Barankin was interviewed by 2 radio stations discussing some of the recent developments in the diagnosis and treatment of rosacea. In the interviews, Dr. Barankin discusses some of the triggers for rosacea including alcohol, stress, hot and spicy foods, sun and wind burn, and more. He also reviews some of the causes of rosacea including genetics, and the demodex mite that lives on the skin. Dr. Barankin discusses the products that rosacea patients should use on their face, and new medications that have come out recently for the treatment of this chronic and stubborn condition which has psychosocial implications as well.

As a medical esthetician, I’m regularly exposed to the latest advancements in the skincare field—and that means navigating through products that actually work and others that have simply become the latest buzzword. One current buzz-about concept in skincare is the use of “all-natural” and organic ingredients. As patients continue to focus on healthier lifestyle choices regarding what they put into their bodies, they are also becoming more educated about what goes on their skin….

Dr. Barankin was quoted in the February 2013 issue of The Chronicle of Skin & Allergy in an article entitled “Therapies to watch for in 2013.” In this article, Dr. Barankin discusses Botox, as well as the new botulinum toxin Dysport and their differences. He is also quoted discussing the new Minoxidil 5% foam for hair loss and its benefits compared to old formulations. Dr. Barankin is also quoted discussing the use of endermologie to improve the appearance of the skin. He also discusses miraDry which is a new laser on the horizon for hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), and how it fits into the treatment armamentarium of dermatologists. Finally, Dr. Barankin is also quoted on the use of new oral biologic therapies for psoriasis; traditionally the biologic drugs for psoriasis have been given by subcutaneous injection or infusion.

Rosacea is a common skin disease that causes redness, pimples, and swelling on the face. Often referred to as “adult acne,” rosacea frequently begins as a tendency to flush or blush easily. It may progress to persistent redness in the center of the face that may gradually involve the cheeks, forehead, chin, and nose. With time, small blood vessels and tiny pimples begin to appear on and around the reddened area. Rosacea is an important condition to recognise and treat early. Dr. Freiman discusses rosacea on CHCH television. Click here to view.
