The term anti-aging is often misrepresented or misunderstood. While hundreds or even thousands of products and services promise to make you look younger and reverse the signs of aging, the reality is a little different.
It is true that certain solutions such as Botox, fillers (e.g. Juvederm, Restylane) and services such as BroadBand Light (BBL or IPL) to remove sun damage can actually make a person’s skin appear smoother and younger, the majority of what is offered on the medical-grade side of the industry will simply help to slow down the aging process. Most drugstore products or spa solutions may merely make the skin look a little more radiant or plump, but not truly do anything at all to reverse or slow down the process of aging skin.
I am a firm believer that collagen stimulating treatments and products (medical grade only, of course) do, in fact slow down volume loss, soften crepey skin and keep the skin plump and hydrated for a more youthful overall look for a much longer time. With that said, I can’t always look in the mirror after treatment and say I look younger. What I can say is that since I started doing collagen building treatments and using good quality home care, my skin has remained basically the same for about 10 years now. If a patient says, ”well, I did a treatment 3 years ago and I don’t see any difference,“ I say “that is awesome, it is 3 years later and your skin looks the same. Your skin is aging slower than it would have otherwise.”
Realistically, promising something that really isn’t possible yet, although it may be one day, is just asking for disappointment. Explaining to our patients that this a long-term solution and not a band-aid solution helps them to understand that not every patient will have a “ wow” reaction after treatment or after using a good collagen producing product for an extended period of time.
With that said, most of our patients will find their skin looks fuller and fine lines greatly improve. They may notice other small improvements as well. I often suggest a combination of what I call “Instant Gratification” (Botox, fillers) followed by the long-term solutions such as microneedling, platelet rich plasma (PRP), ProFractional laser and chemical peels. This way, you can look your best while treating the underlying layers of the skin to delay the signs of aging.
At Toronto Dermatology Centre, we have an extensive collection of anti-aging solutions, both in services and in extremely effective home skin care. By treating your skin with preventative solutions today, your skin will be healthier and fuller now and for years to come.
