A lipoma is a benign growth (benign tumour) made up of fat cells. It develops slowly deep under the skin in the subcutaneous tissue. Some people develop 1 lipoma, while others develop several.
Lipomas can develop at any age, though most commonly in adulthood around middle-age. Both men and women are affected, and sometimes they run in families (hereditary). In most cases we don’t know why a lipoma forms, although occasionally it can develop at a site of previous trauma.
Lipomas grow slowly over years, and are often dome or egg-shaped, and can be several centimetres in size. They feel soft and smooth to the touch, although some feel more rubbery.
Lipomas can develop anywhere that there is fat, and most commonly on the trunk, arms, neck, and shoulders. In most cases, lipomas have no symptoms, although occasionally they can be painful.
Lipomas generally do not require treatment since they are benign, although sometimes they cause pain or restrict movement. There are various techniques to cut out a lipoma.
Our dermatologists and plastic surgeons are highly skilled in safely and permanently removing lipomas from any location on the body. The procedure is performed under local anesthetic with minimal discomfort, and take approximately 15-20 minutes. Patients can return to work the same day.
