The Best Makeup:

NewBeauty magazine has called mineral makeup “makeup with meaning,” and I call it “beauty with benefits.” With its numerous skin enhancers, I consider mineral makeup to be an extension of my skin care.

As a devoted mineral makeup user for many years, I have seen its benefits not only in my own skin, but in an extensive number of my patients. Working in a dermatology practice, I treat patients with various skin issues, from excessive sensitivity, rosacea and acne to problems with uneven pigmentation. Many of these patients have experienced challenges with traditional makeup. Aesthetically, makeup helps to cover skin imperfections, but it can clog pores and make many skin conditions worse.

Mineral makeup offers an ideal solution. Since these formulas are composed of inorganic minerals and are also oil-free, they do not support the growth of bacteria—making mineral makeup especially beneficial for patients with acne-prone skin.  Frequently I see young girls come in to the clinic with a thick layer of traditional makeup, feeling that they are hiding their blemishes, but instead its flat and dense appearance can tend to enhance them. And of course, in blocking the pores at the same time, blemishes will continually to form anew.

Because it does not contain sensitizers like perfumes and chemical dyes that may cause allergies, mineral makeup is considered gentle for sensitive skin types. A patient dealing with rosacea can benefit not only by its ability to calm the skin, but mineral makeup is essentially an extra protection against the sun’s rays, a trigger for flaring rosacea or melasma.

The main ingredients in mineral makeup are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide—both physical sunscreens that provide broad-spectrum sun protection against UVA and UVB rays. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are considered physical blocks because they “sit” on the skin’s surface and are not absorbed by the skin. Physical blocks repel the sun’s damaging rays, blocking out excessive heat.  Zinc is an antioxidant and plays an important role in protecting the skin against free radical-induced oxidative damage.

Interestingly, titanium dioxide has an extremely high light refraction index—even higher than that of a diamond. This light-refractive effect helps to diffuse the appearance of skin imperfections and gives the skin a luminous look.

As far as coverage, mineral makeup creates the most natural finish, which I call a ”non-makeup look.” Though the makeup itself is weightless and practically invisible, it provides long-lasting coverage, leaving the skin with an even, smooth appearance. It feels as though you’re not even wearing makeup!

One final consideration: I was recently in Philadelphia at an outdoor amusement park abundant with water rides with my 4 year old and husband. I decided to take the mineral wear challenge. I applied Jane Iredale Powder Me SPF30 in the morning to see how my skin would react in the 30 degree heat. We were out for about 7 hours and in and out of the water rides continually. Amazingly, at the end of the day I had not been affected by the sun. I was still in all my pasty white glory! I hadn’t even reapplied throughout the day as I normally would have. Needless to say, I have been wearing it every day since, and it is so light and transparent that even men would love this mineral sunscreen. With different formulas from transparent to full coverage, there is no excuse anymore to be covering our faces with toxic make up.
