The Advances & New Treatment in the Management of Atopic Dermatitis Seminar

This evening Dr. Benjamin Barankin spoke to a large group of family physicians on “Advances & New Treatment Approaches in the Management of Atopic Dermatitis.” The talk focussed on preventing and managing dry skin and dealing with our harsh Toronto climate. Treatment options such as the traditional steroids, as well as the newer calcineurin inhibitors (Protopic, Elidel) were also discussed. Moisturizer selection was also discussed. For more difficult or widespread eczema or atopic dermatitis, as well as oral immunosuppressive medications such as azathioprine, methotrexate, prednisone, and cyclosporine may be used. Finally, interesting management strategies including bleach baths were discussed, as well as the use of the new ceramide-based moisturizers, as well as exciting new medications in the pipeline called “biologics.”
