In a recent statement published in the journal Pediatrics by The American Academy of Pediatrics, they have called for banning tanning salon access to minors; the reason is the increased risk of skin cancer associated with tanning salon use.
Similarly in Canada we have had a similar push by the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) to ban Canadians under 18 from using indoor tanning beds. Most of this stems from the International Agency for Research on Cancer work which showed that anyone who begins using tanning beds before age 30 increases their risk of melanoma by 75%. This year in Canada, an estimated 5300 new cases of melanoma and 920 deaths will occur.
