We as physicians have generally felt that diet does not have a great impact on the development of acne. That said, if certain foods seem to make your acne worse, try to avoid or minimize them. See if you can create a diary to track if certain foods consistently make your acne worse.

A recent article by renowned dermatologist Dr. Steven Feldman reviewed 16 research studies and showed that not only does acne affect your appearance, but that acne can lead to depression and low self-esteem. He advises that people suffering from acne see a dermatologist before both physical and emotional scars have a chance to develop.

In a recent statement published in the journal Pediatrics by The American Academy of Pediatrics, they have called for banning tanning salon access to minors; the reason is the increased risk of skin cancer associated with tanning salon use.

In a recent research study, a special adhesive tape used to collect cells from suspicious skin lesions allowed accurate identification of localized and invasive melanomas. In the study, researchers used a patented technology to collect samples from suspicious skin lesions and sent them to the manufacturer’s lab for genetic analysis. Researchers are hoping to have this test clinically available in two years.

An interesting article in the December 2010 issue of Dermatologic Surgery showed that Botox injections for wrinkles result in improvements in quality of life and self-esteem.
